    That's not what she's saying at all.  She literally said that she was consumed with grief over the situation and from losing Nasiens.  However she grew to love Mertyl as her own child and viewed it as a sort of destiny that they would raise him instead of Nasiens.  They still felt terrible about losing Nasiens but they were happy to have met and become Mertyl's parents.  Mertyl's was the one good thing that came from this terrible situation where they lost their first born child but that doesn't mean they didn't want Nasiens back as well.
