    They went to space. However, a hair strand got caught up in the circuitry. After they petrified themselves, the hair got turned to stone as well, and this messed with the circuits, thus making it impossible to hear the earth team (although earth team can hear them), and when the fuse blew, the screen they were using to see out and plot courses went dark, making it impossible for them to see where they were going.

    In space, you need to be VERY precise when docking parts together. It's why they got stanley in the first place. But for the last one, they couldn't do it. Ryusei however, snuck on the last part, and docked it himself.
    He did it by using his own momentum to spin around in place, transferring the force to the parts of the ship he was touching. This allowed him to accurately guide the part and dock it. Which... is absolutely insane, but technically not impossible. Super nuts though
