There was no retcon, also the 8 years was the society healing for prior to the "war", people misunderstood it, but they kept hanging out for those 8 years, just not all together all the time like they used to, and when things finally settled down, and they were adults they finally could get with each other (which is pretty normal), and like PumpkinSpice said, there are a lot of other examples of shounen protagonist around the same age.

This was really wholesome, dont get why it was so short tho... but it was great while it lasted
