Your body becomes their mission! Five young students from a Buddhist university—three men and two women—find limited demand for their specialized skills in modern Tokyo... at least among the living. But all those unconventional college lessons—like channeling, dowsing, and ESP—now offer them a unique connection to the dead. These deceased individuals remain trapped in their bodies, unable to transition to their next reincarnation.
The quintet establishes the Kurosagi (Black Heron)—their symbol being an ominous bird—Corpse Delivery Service. Whether it's suicide, murder, accident, or illness, they ensure the body is transported wherever necessary to liberate the soul. The team from Kurosagi can sense potential clients from afar—it's fortunate that one of the girls specialized in embalming!
Note: Dark Horse has announced plans to resume English releases of this series, continuing with omnibus volumes. Since 2015, no new individual volumes have been released beyond volume 14. However, four omnibus volumes, each containing three original volumes, have been published. A fifth omnibus, collecting volumes 13, 14, and 15, is set for release on July 13, 2022. A sixth omnibus, encompassing volumes 16, 17, and 18, will follow if volume five receives a positive response.
I think it's hard to judge this manga when reading it in English with amateur translation (especially the early chapters). I don't doubt it's still an insane headtrip in Japanese, but I'm sure it'd be much easier than what we got.
But yeah the confusing wrap-up kinda reminds me of how off-the-rails Kingdom Hearts gets with each new release. Like the original concept was interesting though relatively simple (albeit vague), and then increasingly descends into an orgy of semi-literal abstractions and friendship speeches. It's both fascinating and infuriating. God bless Japan.
Overall pretty solid, read everything in a week instead of watching the anime. All the characters are likable but kinda shallow in some aspect. This manga is not deep in any means and is just a “feel good manga”
