1. We know SO much from Theo other than the love for books. He's an orphan, outcast, and no friends, but it's not because of his race, it's just because he didn't talk or communicate. Plus we watch how he learn and grow for each situation he's facing in the present from the merchant backstory as well which is great writing to me.
2. This never has been a seriously tone story ALL the time. From the first chapter alone it was a fun time of Theo reading a story and his imagination as the main character, so we all know this can't be a mystery, psychological, serious tone.
3. lastly, I suggest reading again like, READ it carefully and look into small details from the drawings. It might surprise you that this is actually a great series.
