Legitimately an amazing manga. Although a lot of the initial hype and fanbase were centered around memes, there is now an incredibly dedicated fanbase that loves the series.
Although Chihiro seems like the standard edge-lord MC, he is a caring individual. Instead of being taken seriously, his apathetic appearance is used for comedic effect. As of now (ch 36), it has been made clear that Chihiro is kind and cares deeply about others.
Hokozano is amazing. He's 23 and only started drawing during the pandemic when he was 19. If you read his previous one-shots, you can see the gradual progression and improvement of his art. This all culminates to Kagurabachi.
The art in Kagurabachi is cinematic. Fight scenes are drawn dynamically, and there is lots of thought put in the placement of characters and transitions between scenes. The facial expressions in the earlier chapters are a bit awkward, but they improve. But throughout the manga, the action scenes are consistently well drawn. Plus, I love the gold fish.
The plot may feel somewhat fast-paced, but every single scene connects together. Rather than revenge, it is centered around Chihiro learning about his father's swords, and their impact. From the Sojo-arc, and now to the auction arc, the story is beautifully constructed and forces Chihiro to confront different atrocities. This does not mean other characters are neglected. Many have undergone their own personal development, and I'm sure other characters will get focus later in the manga.
If you are initially not interested story, at least read to Hiyuki's introduction. Read the auction arc. Things only improve as the manga progresses.
0Kagurabachi, as of me writing this, only has 36 chapters, but it has already proven it is amazing. When we call Kagurabachi "peak", we are not exaggerating. Don't let the memes stop you, read Kagurabachi now. This is the future of shonen.
I don't know, I didn't find any interests. Probably I'm not suitable with it, the artstyle is also normal, not special.
I'm 19 chapters in, but I'd still say it's too early to judge the pitfalls of a story that's yet to unfold properly. But the first arc was very fast paced, action packed and had great characterisation. The mangaka seems to have perfected the art of telling a very cohesive story. The villains are being set up to be fearsome, the good guys seem really cool/likeable and the world building is very interesting. For a story to be able to do that with just 19 chapters, I'd say it's an impressive feat. It's definitely left me curious for more.
Definitely recommended. Give it a read, marinate with it. It's got a lot more depth than you think!
To the guy who rated it with just 3 chapters and memed it (below), get with the times already. It's a solid story with great action and a real following as of today. I hope he gives it another read and a more sincere rating in the future.
I read the first chapter the day the raws leaked, shrugged my shoulder and moved on but the internet clearly didn´t. We are now 3 chapters deep and getting to "grow up "with Kagurabachi hasn´t changed my opinion one bit. Another middle-of-the-road demon hunter action drama in an endless sequence of such. The AU 50s setting is the only element that stands out. The series is a bit too edgy for its own good and is hindered by Jump´s strict editorial guidelines so none of that can go anywhere. The still Shounen Jump SQ would have been a better home, Hell's Paradise ran there, but no one would have cared. It has maybe 10% of the WSJ readership. This is also way too simplistic and juvenile for Seinen magazine. Tricky.
The art is quite good for a weekly series and this is easily one of the better new series from the magazine in years. Very faint praise of course. The manga could drag itself into a C+ over time and the one-shot this is somewhat based on, Roku's Pact, seems to be more interesting to me. I love the memes though and hope to see it Morb itself into a billion-dollar IP.
Update: The manga is still the same old middle-of-the-road action Shounen after a year and the art got worse as the author had to find a style he could stick to get it out weekly. The definition of mid with no strong negative or positive aspect to make it stick out. A shame that the meme burned itself out after a month.
Everywhere I look, it's "this already gaps One Piece!" "this is so boring, it's gonna be axed in two weeks" "this is the new member of the big 3 and it's not 2 or 3" "wow it's the most generic story I've ever read" "omg this is the peak of peak" etc etc
This manga has been going on for two chapters as I write this. It's started fine so far. It's interesting enough. I'm not going to be rating it right now because rating it right now is fucking stupid. The memes are just so goddamn annoying.
