Juujika no Rokunin

Tries to be an edgy, serious revenge story, but fails horribly by how over the top it is. If you don't take it seriously and instead read it as more of a comedy, because of how ridiculous it gets at some points, it's not bad and quite entertaining. Turn off your brain and enjoy the gore.

This is the most correct take I've ever read in a manga review. I'm stunned.

This is about as much of a psychological thriller as Spongebob, but at least the latter tried to develop its female cast.

I've read through c132 mostly out of boredom and it is pretty entertaining for the wrong reasons. Generally I found myself criticizing the story from an editor's perspective, wondering what it is about the environment the manga is released into that makes it so reliant on spectacle instead of story. I wonder whether there were decisions made based on keeping readership numbers high rather than furthering the narrative in the way the author intended, or if it would have always lacked depth. Thanks to the regular use of flashbacks, it's surprising how many opportunities for interesting side stories haven't been taken. Also surprising is how the ones which have been told have largely been to further the shallow portrayal of evil as evil. I know it's shounen but not even a smidgen of nuance? A sliver off the rind someone was going to send to the nuance garbage bin?

It's utterly unconscionable how badly grandpa has been wasted in this manga. I really have no way to describe the absurdity of how his potential to a story like this has been consistently ignored.
