Its similar to a lot of magic systems where you increase your circles to unlock more powerful spells but it has more branches where you have to train each element hence the versatile mage. Martial arts and magic system are pretty similar broken down in the basic three components; martial arts with techniques, control of ki, compacity of ki and magic with spells, control of mana, compacity of mana. I agree that the system use here is a little simple where you see people spamming the same spells where it seems like you don't get a lot of different types of spells for each stage of an element. I have only seen like three different types of magic systems: rpg, cultivation and fantasy. RPG mostly used in isekai manga where you level up and learn or unlock spells. Cultivation used here and in most manhua that have magic its basically long range martial arts without weapons.

Personally this IS a perfect balance as one sided story would be either just fantasy isekai(like +1000s others) in fmc world or simple slice of life(too bland for some readers) in mmc world.
This gives it a certain uniqueness.
