    I've only seen it happen only once so far. It was in the manga, I Was Dismissed from the Hero’s Party Because They Don't Need My Training Skills (long title, I know).

    MC was only good for training and made level-grinding quick and easy for the party. However, he was eventually outpaced by the party and even started dragging them down. The hero was remorseful when he had to fire him and the party set him up with a rather large payout in gold and even got him some territory to rule over as a lord. Not a bad severance package, imo.
