That's how the whole "Vileness" trend started, because you could actually write an interesting character that was anti-hero.
The problem is - to write an anti-hero you have to be an actually good writer.
So as an effect we still get goody-goody characters that are good, pure, and everything good happens to them, they solve every crisis after thinking for two panels.
Instead of it being just boring, it's now boring, stupidly contrived and at some point frankly ridiculous (like in this manga).
