In media, showing you "need" someone is usually shorthand for one of two things. Either they are crazy and super-dependent in the most unhealthy way, or they are in love. Sometimes both.
Of course, irl, it doesn't always mean that, and people are complex. But in fictional media, where you don't have the luxury of several hundred days of relationship-building, you need to use shorthand and typically lose a TON of nuance. So, either the writer is trying their hardest to include nuance, or the dude is in love and/or nuts. You can pick whichever makes more sense to you
