    That scene was beautiful reminds me about the same situation from my favorite visual Novels Utawarerumono. The Mc who is also a foreigner (not really give lore but same position as Kai roughly) took the mantle of his best friend and lived on as him. He visited his friends blind mother even if it pained him to lie to her but right before the climax he told the truth and the same with Kai happened.
