I admit I don't know much about historical France apart from reading Rose of Versailles a long time ago so the TL notes are helping me out a lot.
The manga-ka is known for his compelling and realistic protagonist and antagonist pairs and this story does deliver on that premise well. I feel like the main compelling reason to root for Gideon is that he truly believes in peaceful protest or working within the system to help everyone even though there are a lot of chapters where he fails and terrible things happen because of it.
Also, I feel that his art has improved a lot since Ghost Tower esp with all the elaborate French costumes, which can be just tiring to re-draw often. If I had to say the minor downside would be the random fanservice which is still less than I expected too.
BTW: Props to Silly scans for picking it up again after 2016 ...I totally forgot about this series for a long time.
