The series that gave birth to the Vampire Hunter D anime. In 12,090 A.D., the world is shrouded in darkness. Humanity is just beginning to recover from three centuries of oppression by the vampire race known as the Nobility. The prolonged conflict has left its scars; cities are reduced to ruins, and the rural areas are divided into small villages and fiefdoms, constantly battling nightly attacks by the degenerate vampires—and the remnants of their genetically engineered demons and werewolves. Vampire Hunter D has been available in English through Dark Horse Books (in collaboration with Digital Manga Publishing) since May 24, 2005. The first novel in the series inspired the original Vampire Hunter D movie. The third novel served as the basis for the Vampire Hunter D: Blood Lust movie.
