I kind of love this portrayal of teens. Too often in manga, stereotyping is done as a shortcut to deliver the story : the nerd acts this way not because he is a character but because he is "a nerd", and the same goes for the jock. This is true in both romance, shonen, shojo, and across all genre, and serves to paint the protagonists as "different" from the rest.
Here, stereotypes do nothing to inform the characters, they are achetypes, but they also are their own person. Nerds can be friendly or absolute jerks, and also have inner monologue and character. Jocks can be morons or thoughtful, or both, and they can evolve through the story.
