Set in contemporary Tokyo, "Sweet Cream and Red Strawberries" unfolds through a series of vignettes that capture moments in the lives of four women. Touko and Chihiro share a one-bedroom apartment as roommates. Akiyo harbors feelings for an old college friend while working as a prostitute. Suzuki leads a solitary life, navigating her daily routine with thoughts of love always lingering. Apart from Touko and Chihiro, the characters do not cross paths. Instead, their stories unfold separately in different parts of the city.
Throughout the book, themes of emotional resilience emerge as the women grapple with jealousy, loneliness, and unrequited love. Despite living in close proximity, Touko and Chihiro keep their inner turmoil hidden, maintaining calm smiles while quietly unraveling inside.
