Since his mother's passing, first-year student Setsuna Kai vowed to grow stronger in her memory. Despite relentless daily training at his elementary school's kendo club, he remains unable to defeat his rival and friend, Mirai Kaname. However, during their usual walk home from practice, an ominous black haze engulfs Tokyo, blocking the sky, dropping temperatures, and covering the city with crystal snow in the middle of summer.
As Setsuna returns to his dark apartment, a child crashes through the walls, hands him a wrapped box, and breathes their last in his arms. Before Setsuna can process what happened, a demon intent on ending his life appears. Near death, Setsuna's resolve to live awakens a power within him, allowing him to summon a demon of his own.
The Cerberus demon named Cool informs Setsuna that he is one of the eight Devil Children who fought Hell and must now fight to save the world from destruction. Though reluctant to accept such a significant responsibility, Setsuna's determination to surpass Mirai drives him to embrace this role. Alongside Mirai—who also happens to be one of the fated Devil Children—Setsuna delves into the Demon World to find the other six to fulfill their mission.
