Oooku

In the Edo period of Japan, spanning from 1603 to 1868, a peculiar and devastating disease known as the Redface Pox emerged, targeting the male population. Within eighty years of its first appearance, the number of men had plummeted to just one quarter of the female population. As a result, women assumed all roles traditionally held by men, including that of the Shogun. Men, now highly valued for their reproductive role, were meticulously protected. The most attractive men were chosen to serve in the Shogun's Inner Chambers. The manga series "Oooku" garnered significant accolades, winning an Excellence Prize at the 2006 Japan Media Arts Festival, the 13th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Grand Prize alongside "Gekiga Hyouryuu" in 2009, and the 56th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shoujo manga category in 2011. It also received a special prize at The Japanese Association of Feminist Science Fiction and Fantasy's fifth annual Sense of Gender awards in 2005. VIZ Media published the series in English as "Oooku: The Inner Chambers" under the VIZ Signature imprint from August 18, 2009, to March 15, 2022. Additionally, it has been released in Spanish by Ediciones Tomodomo since April 22, 2024. The manga was adapted into a live-action film in 2010. Two television drama adaptations aired in 2012, followed by another in 2023.
