Having an old master incurably ill is something more stories should adept. Makes the old master trope more grounded. I really hope that he hasn't just died though, but for him to live out his days in comfort and peace.
And granting the fire king a disciple at his end and fulfilling not only his duty but giving his life purpose at the end of his sanity is wholesome and befitting for that shitty old man.
