It would be a better twist if he slammed the priestess but she is actually good, and he straight up killed her, while the real bad guy is among the men.
The theme is something I have seen before, the contrast between a child and the adults that surround them, but Konishi-sensei's art has such a feel to it that seeing little Yoshino all dolled up and innocent surrounded by these imposing men that clearly don't live honest lives, something you can perceive by the little details you see in their hands and posture, and them carrying her things like a blanket, umbrella and teddy bear, and finally her little hand that almost can't hold two fingers of the man by her side.
The fact you don't see the faces of the adult, and the focus is on baby Yoshino, the world feels so big and imposing at the same time just around her things feel so bright and innocent, because she still doesn't understand the world she lives in.
