Aoyagi Ritsuka is a troubled sixth grader who lost his memory two years ago and developed an alternate personality. His mother frequently berates and occasionally beats him, demanding to know what happened to the "real" Ritsuka. His only friend and protector, his older brother Seimei, was recently killed.
Suddenly, Soubi appears, claiming to be Seimei's friend. He reveals that Ritsuka's true name is "Loveless" and that Seimei had assigned him to take care of and protect Ritsuka. Soon, Ritsuka finds himself drawn into a bizarre underground society where teams of people, known as "Fighter Units" and "Sacrifices," battle using elaborate and beautifully-phrased spells.
Ritsuka seeks both acceptance of himself and answers to the mystery surrounding his brother's death and the reasons behind it.
Loveless was initially published in English by Tokyopop for 8 volumes from February 7, 2006, to September 1, 2008, until the company became defunct. VIZ Media later acquired the rights and began publishing the series starting from September 11, 2012. The series has also been published digitally by Kodansha USA since April 28, 2020. Additionally, it has been published in Polish by Studio JG since July 11, 2014.
