It's about a war between the Imperial Country (Koukoku) and the Empire (Teikoku). The main character, Shinjou Naoe, a First Lieutenant in the Imperial Country army, is thrust into a prolonged and desperate war. The sudden invasion by the Empire's Eastern division crushed the Imperial Country's Northern Defense Forces. Shinjou and his battalion of 600 men were ordered to engage in battle at the rear to delay the advance of the Empire's 40,000-strong army. Koukoku no Shugosha is an adaptation of Satou Daisuke's alternate-history war novels with the same title. Twice in a row, in 2005 and 2006, the manga series was chosen as a Jury Recommended Work at the 9th and 10th Japanese Media Arts Awards Festival in the manga division. It was also nominated for the 1st Manga Taisho Award in 2008.
