Inu Neko Jump isn't primarily categorized as a sports manga. It also integrates elements of romance and comedy, a challenging combination to master, yet this manga pulls it off quite well.

The storyline was fairly decent—a retired high school long jumper enrolls in college where he encounters a host of peculiar individuals (on the track team he initially refuses to join) and meets one extraordinary person who pushes him back into jumping, helping him rediscover his talents, albeit unintentionally. The narrative is touching and humorous but won't leave you sobbing uncontrollably or desperately craving more. Once it concludes, you simply remark, "That was a nice manga," and proceed to the next.

The artwork could be considered somewhat dubious. Personally, it didn’t bother me, but it might deter some readers. For instance, it's very cartoonish, with many characters sharing similar eyes, which can be confusing at times. However, the scenery was quite impressive. The mangaka’s characters are adorably short and squat (with a few exceptions), making them all appear huggable, especially the protagonist, Ozu.

The manga’s character development heavily revolves around Ozu and Yuki. Ozu is a rather laid-back character with suppressed energy that should ideally be channeled into long jump (a shared dream with Yuki from their childhood was to orbit the earth). He’s somewhat submissive and occasionally exaggerated in his behavior. Sometimes his character seems contradictory, shifting between being cool and confident to resembling a nerdy otaku.

Yuki is socially anxious, often wearing headphones, but she becomes bold when around Ozu. She’s a bit eccentric and mistakenly believes Ozu took her virginity thirteen years prior. When they’re together, she converses with him, treating him almost like a pet, and becomes fiercely jealous if other girls are close to him. This results in her disliking Watsuki, a girl Ozu knew from high school. Nonetheless, as Ozu rekindles his passion for the sport and Yuki learns to genuinely connect with someone, their dynamic is fantastic.

Overall, I’d recommend this manga to anyone seeking a light-hearted romance with a touch of renewed spirit.
