Himizu

Every day in Japan, 2,500 people pass away from various causes. Do you think you'll be one of them? No, of course not. Do you think you'll win the lottery? You'd like to believe so, wouldn't we all? But Sumida is different. He desires everything to stay as it is; he wants a regular life, a standard job, and average children, never aiming to be exceptionally lucky or unlucky, finding comfort in mediocrity. Anyone who disagrees seems foolish to him, destined to struggle up a mountain they can never summit, fated to die in despair, wishing their life had been better. When his mother kicks his father out of the house and onto the streets, Sumida believes he will manage. When his mother leaves him to live with her boyfriend, he tries to make the best of it. When he realizes that he's no longer average, he strives to make his life meaningful in the only way he knows. When the voices in the back of his mind speak to him, he does his best to ignore them.
