This was surprisingly... educational?
Though it contains mild ecchi elements, its sole aim is to explain how sex functions as a whole.
For a work penned by a Japanese author, it tackles extremely sensitive topics within their society. It covers all aspects of sex such as threesomes, general fetishes, abuse, infidelity, and even being transgender – all considered taboos even by today's standards, let alone in the 90s when this series began.
The narrative also delves into all factors surrounding sex, not just the act itself. It explores virginity, psychological elements, how sex differs between teenagers and those past their 50s, and of course, love.
The story is quite pleasant, depicting everyday situations and offering relatable ways to handle them in an honest manner.
The art style is very much from the 90s but is really good, especially during action scenes.
I truly wish I had access to Futari Ecchi when I was a teenager and needed all that advice while feeling insecure about sex. Give it a try.
This manga is quite educational regarding sex. I enjoy the plot and the characters for the most part (although the main male character can be a real jerk sometimes). For someone like me who was never taught much about sex or how the body changes during puberty, I learned almost everything through this manga. One thing that seems kind of ridiculous to me is that they show nearly every part of the woman's body, but when it came to the guy's penis, it was replaced with a banana... I don't know, maybe that's just supposed to be funny or something, lol :) But overall, I really loved this manga and can't wait for its completion!! :)
The first time I read this manga was about seven years ago, and it was the first ecchi manga I ever encountered. At the time, I didn't realize it was ecchi; I thought it was hentai. Yes, I stumbled upon it among a bunch of hentai mangas back then. The author clarified that it's not hentai but rather an erotic one (laughs).
Story:
This manga revolves around the love-comedy story of newlyweds Makoto and Yura-san. Using them as examples along with various other characters they meet, the author discusses common relationship and sexual issues faced by men and women. Incorporating statistics and surveys into the story is a brilliant idea, earning two thumbs up from me. With the help of Makoto’s older brother Akira and Yura-san’s younger sister, they navigate through every sexual problem they encounter. Honestly, this manga is very educational regarding sexual practices and offers excellent relationship tips, dos and don’ts, different positions, etc.
I appreciate how the relationship between the newlyweds strengthens and progresses. If there’s one storyline I didn’t like, it’s about Jun-chan, Makoto’s little sister. She was introduced as a kind, sweet, and shy girl. However, the author uses her to explore different kinds of relationships under the guise of "searching for true love," which frustrates me. (Calm down, calm down) Alright, alright, that’s her role, I have to accept it T_T.
Art:
I’m no art critic, especially when it comes to manga. As long as there are no deformed faces or similar flaws, it’s passable~ :D It’s good that the male protagonist is an average person with normal looks, making him easy to draw. The challenging part must be Yura-san—man, isn’t she lovely with an almost perfect figure! :D
Characters:
Onota Makoto is an average-looking salaryman at an international business corporation. He always thinks about sex when he’s alone with his wife, somewhat childish and sometimes selfish, but he loves Yura-san wholeheartedly. His wife Onota Yura is a full-time housewife, beautiful, kind, and shy. She always gives in to whatever Makoto wants (that guy). Onota Akira, Makoto’s older brother and a lawyer, seems to appear whenever Makoto has a sexual issue, offering expert advice. Kawada Rika, Yura’s younger sister and a college student, is also a sex expert, sharing tips and advice based on her experiences with different men. Onota Jun, Makoto’s little sister, well, let’s just say “curiosity killed the cat.”
Enjoyment:
I wonder who wouldn’t enjoy reading this manga—enjoyment to the MAX!! Seriously, it’s a great read for those curious about sex. A must-read for those starting out in relationships, whether you’re a man or a woman.
Thanks for reading!
Saying that this is hentai is akin to labeling any movie with sexual content or nudity as porn. It's shocking how prudish people can be in this modern era. This underscores the necessity for comprehensive and realistic sexual education, not just about the risks but also about the typical conduct of sex. Men and women often lack understanding of each other’s minds and bodies. When a man is expected to know exactly what to do, he may only have one reference point: porn. This is precisely why the author created this manga series, and it highlights its critical need. Naturally, the manga can be arousing, and feeling ashamed of this is unnecessary. Sexual development inherently involves such reactions. Sex is a vital aspect of life, and there should be no shame associated with it, especially when learning to understand and enjoy your own and your (future) partner's sexuality.
I read the manga with a female friend when we were younger; we weren’t in a relationship or had any sexual experiences together before or after. We took notes and discussed it, learning a lot which I am grateful for. When I entered a relationship with my girlfriend, both of us were virgins, yet we enjoyed our first time having sex. After several years, our sex life and love for each other have only deepened and improved. I remain forever grateful to the manga, and I’ve recommended it to many people I know.
Futari ecchi is what you'd give to someone with an insatiable curiosity if you wanted them to learn about anything. Imagine if instead of sexual facts, the book contained methods for solving calculus equations; you'd come away a mathematician.
Anyway, what I mean to say is that this isn't just any ecchi manga; it's the ultimate ecchi experience. Yet, at the same time, you're gaining a deep understanding of sex education. I learned things I never knew before, like statistics on first-time experiences around the world or the average shape of a penis. That's why I rated the story so highly...because it's also a textbook...just in a more enticing format to read :]
The foremost aspect to highlight is the author's declaration on the first page: "This is not a hentai manga, but an erotic work intended for thoughtful readers. It serves as a guide to love and sex, dedicated to those seeking ultimate pleasure in life. I am not joking..." This clarification is crucial because a cursory glance might lead one to misconstrue its intent.
With that established, Futari Ecchi can be likened to a love bible or a comprehensive guide for beginners, even dubbed Manga Sutra. Yet, it transcends mere sexual content. At its core, Futari Ecchi offers a psychological, sociological, scientific, and medical exploration of human relationships, with particular emphasis on the role of sexual interactions within these bonds.
For those who consider themselves well-versed in matters of sex, rest assured, this manga will impart new knowledge regardless of your experience level.
A significant strength of Futari Ecchi lies in its narrative. The story revolves around a man and a woman who meet through an omiai (matchmaking session) and fall in love. Their unique challenge is their shared virginity, initially kept secret from each other out of shyness. The plot unfolds as a romantic comedy, maintaining a light-hearted and enjoyable tone. Upon revealing their inexperience, they decide to learn about sex together—an approach that invites readers to grow alongside the characters.
The psychological impact of relationships on individuals is meticulously examined. The consequences of infidelity are discussed (though the main characters remain faithful). Various aspects such as male sexual fantasies, symbolic dreams, and women's preferences for intimacy before sex are analyzed from multiple angles.
Sociologically, the manga frequently presents graphs, charts, and statistics to illustrate differing views on relationships between men and women. These data points align with the characters' current situations, ranging from what constitutes a successful marriage to preferred sexual positions. Adding credibility, the author cites his sources directly within the manga. However, given its 1997 inception, some information may now be dated. Additionally, approximately 90% of the statistical data pertains specifically to Japanese populations, with the remaining 10% derived from American surveys, offering intriguing comparative insights.
Scientific and medical elements also feature prominently. Detailed explanations cover variations in sexual anatomy and their implications on sexual experiences. Hormonal influences on both sexes are explored, including recurring discussions on their effects.
Futari Ecchi includes numerous sex scenes, though explicit lower-body details are omitted (the most you'll see is a banana, literally). These scenes serve dual purposes: illustrating the protagonists' affection and intimacy in a sweet, innocent manner, and educating readers on sexual positions and transitions—potentially useful practical knowledge.
Notably, roughly 70% of the advice targets men regarding women, which likely explains the existence of a separate version titled Futari Ecchi for Ladies.
In summary, the harmonious blend of engaging storytelling and insightful relationship guidance renders Futari Ecchi an exceptionally unique manga. Most adults would undoubtedly find enjoyment in reading it.
I first discovered Futari Ecchi online while searching for manga to read. The concept behind it was incredibly intriguing and relatable, which has always been popular in real life. The story centers around Makoto and Yura, a newly married, inexperienced, and virginal couple who are committed to ensuring their experiences together improve with each passing day. Meanwhile, their friends and families have plenty of advice and opinions to share.
One crucial point to note is that the manga is rated mature due to its sexual content and explicit language at times. Surprisingly, everything blends together exceptionally well, making it difficult even for sensitive readers to be entirely offended by the series' events. While you might assume this is just another Hentai manga, it's much more than that. Think of it as an erotic TV drama akin to those aired after 9 or 10 PM.
The only significant drawback I see with this amazing series is its new name in stores—Manga Sutra. It's somewhat embarrassing to ask if they have anything called "Sutra" in stock. Personally, I think Futari Ecchi was a fine title to begin with, but don't let the name deter you from this quite awesome book.
This manga is truly a masterpiece, not because it contains mature content but due to its educational value, excellent plot, wonderful romance, and lovable characters.
I really admire how the main characters tackle their problems together, how they behave like children during their fights, how the protagonist always resists the temptations from other girls, and how their relationships with family and friends are portrayed.
Here are my ratings for this manga!
Story: 10 - The story is just perfect; I especially love the romance part.
Art: 9 - It's slightly dated but still great!
Characters: 10 - The characters are very lovable. The only one I didn't like is Makie because she constantly tries to seduce Makoto >:(
Enjoyment: 10! - I always smiled after finishing a chapter!
Overall: 10 - Because it deserves it and it's highly educational!
I hope to see more mangas/anime like this one, whether or not they include mature scenes. Overall, I'll give it a 10/10!
