For me the manga was not just about romance, it was also an introduction to a very particular and often misunderstood practice, which showed BDSM from another angle.
The author had choice between 1/ keeping this path and having a coherent work as a whole.
Or 2/ creating this arc to support a drama and give himself an excuse to get there: BDSM can also be a kid sexually tortured by an adult, against consent (I use this hard wording on purpose, but that's what the manga conveys as an idea) while his boyfriend watches.
He chose the second path.
BDSM is a culturally universal fantasy, but adultery, pedophilia or rape are not (the manga doesn’t depict it directly obviously, it’s a constant understatement), and clearly for me the author has lost his way a little here in favor of drama and kink bait.
