Just to play devil's advocate here, I kind of understand the old man's motives here. He is worried about the survival of his race , which is inherently weaker than most of the other demons.
He's not just afraid of change, he's afraid about the children not being able to integrate into demon society, and his clan not being protected by high-ranking demons anymore, which would be a death sentence.

It's like how some parents do not want their children following an art of philosophy degree because it'll be hard for them to find a job after school. You'd rather they go into more stable careers, where they won't be as happy, but they won't be left wanting for money.
