Black Bird

Misao Harada has had the ability to see demons since childhood and recalls a boy who shielded her from these malevolent entities, promising to return for her one day. Now in high school, Misao dreams of leading a normal life and having a boyfriend. One day, as she returns home, she notices a strikingly handsome new neighbor. To her astonishment, he introduces himself as Kyou, her long-lost childhood friend and first love. The following day, on her 16th birthday, Misao is attacked by a classmate who reveals himself to be a demon. Intent on consuming her for eternal youth, Misao's situation seems dire. Just when all hope seems lost, Kyou comes to her rescue, unveiling his identity as the leader of a Tengu clan. He explains that making Misao his bride would bring prosperity to his clan and offers her a choice: become his bride and gain protection, or face continued attacks from other demons attracted by the power of her blood. "Black Bird" was published in English by VIZ Media under the Shojo Beat imprint from August 4, 2009, to March 4, 2014. It won the 54th Shogakukan Manga Award.
