Rei Kiriyama is a young prodigy. Rei, an orphan, resides alone in a sparsely furnished apartment. As a teenager navigating an adult world, life poses significant challenges for him. He's on the brink of becoming a professional shogi player, a traditional Japanese board game, but his life outside this pursuit is almost non-existent.
Fortunately, with the support of some lifelong friends, Rei gets a chance to rebuild his life. His story has garnered recognition, being nominated for the 2nd Annual Manga Taishou in 2009 and winning the award in 2011. It also won the Kodansha Manga Award in the general category in 2011, which it shared with Space Brothers. Additionally, it received the Grand Prize at the 18th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2014 and the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards Grand Prize in 2021.
