About a robot named Jack, who frequently appears in Shimizu's SF stories. Jack is unique for his remarkably human-like psyche. He once believed he was human and could consume food, unlike many robots of his time. While on bounty-hunting duties on an alien planet, Jack experiences a flashback to a period when he thought he was human. In this memory, Jack and his partner are imprisoned and receive minimal food daily. They share their meager meals equally. As days turn into weeks, the food supply dwindles further. His partner, a human, grows weaker, while Jack, despite feeling hunger, remains physically strong. Months later, they are rescued, but Jack's partner has already succumbed to starvation. It is then that Jack learns for the first time he is not human, yet he continues to live.
