He is the sacrifice of the male Zero pair. He is the more cruel and brutal of the two, though both are quite blunt and cold towards others. A notable instance of this is in volume 5, where Ritsuka rushes home past curfew, and Soubi comments that Ritsuka will likely receive a "beating." Natsuo and Youji find this amusing, exclaiming, "A mother abusing her child! That's the best!" while grinning happily.

Nagisa openly favors Youji, often overlooking Natsuo. According to Youji, this preference stems from his strong resemblance to Nagisa's younger sister.
