Wim Knaup is a young boy who often faces bullying from his neighbors in Ruhenheim due to his father being an alcoholic. He works as a pageboy at Hotel Versteck, running errands for Mr. Klaus Poppe. Whenever Wim receives his salary, he takes it home to support himself and his father. Unfortunately, most of his earnings are spent on his father's drinking habit. Because of this, the neighborhood kids frequently bully him and steal his wages. The insults hurled at his father infuriate him, even though many of them are true. One day, after enduring another round of bullying, a mysterious man approaches him on the road and asks, "Hey boy, don't you hate them? Don't you hate them enough to kill them?"
