The Archangel of Earth, Angel of Justice, and Angel of Death, Uriel was once a member of the Seven Great Angels and held the rank of Thrones. His wings are dark brown, almost black, mirroring the earth itself. He once loved Alexiel and was the one who sentenced her to a horrific punishment. This act drove him to madness, and in his grief, he tore out his vocal cords, which had the power to make curses come true, as penance for his sins against his beloved. Finding this insufficient, he left Heaven to dwell in Hades, where he fashioned a dragon's body for NidHegg and created a new body for Kirie's soul when she arrived. He called her "Doll." Additionally, he crafted a living-mechanical body for Kato and later acted as a father figure to him.
Because Uriel feels remorseful about damning souls to Hell, he made a mask for himself. When worn, the mask suppresses his feelings of kindness and conscience, allowing him to be cruel and ruthless as the Angel of Death. When Setsuna comes seeking Sara's soul, Uriel confesses he has been waiting for Alexiel's soul and asks Setsuna to behead him with his own scythe and cast him into Hell to atone for his judgment on Alexiel. However, Setsuna refuses and instead tells Uriel that if he truly wishes to atone, his punishment will be to live with the knowledge of what he did.
After sorting out his thoughts, Uriel attaches a mechanical device to his neck that amplifies the vibrations of his throat, enabling him to speak audibly once again.
