Tsukasa is a Wavemaster and the protagonist. He is a young boy with silver hair, dressed in grey robes. At the beginning of the series, he wakes up in a dungeon within The World, utterly confused about his presence there or his identity. It doesn't take long for Tsukasa to realize that he is trapped inside the game, unable to log out, while his physical body lies comatose in the real world. Initially portrayed as a cynical loner who shuns others, Tsukasa gradually starts forming connections with characters like Mimiru, Bear, Subaru, and others as the narrative unfolds.
In reality, Tsukasa's name is An Shouji, and she is actually a girl. Raised by her father after her mother's death, An endured both physical and mental abuse from him. His mistreatment also distanced her from her gender identity; he treated her as a boy, denying her access to feminine products and basic hygiene items. There are subtle hints suggesting that her father might be an alcoholic. Upon awakening from her coma, Ryo Sakuma, the player behind Bear, becomes her legal guardian and enrolls her in a boarding school. Here, she meets Mariko, the player who controls Subaru.
