Shugo's twin sister, Rena, introduces him to The World, the MMORPG where this story unfolds. She won a pair of rare avatars from a contest, which Aura rigged so Rena would win. These avatars are modeled after former heroes from the game. Rena uses a chibi version of the Black Rose avatar and gives the other to Shugo. Her class type is Heavy Blade, fitting her headstrong personality. More than anything, Rena wishes for Shugo to become a hero, often demanding that he rescue her as part of this goal. She also hopes for their broken family to reunite. Rena narrates the next episode previews by providing "special event information." In A.I. Buster 2, it is revealed that Rena used to play a Blademaster named Bridgit before adopting the Black Rose avatar. Her character name is Rena, though Blackrose is her login name.
