Hijikata Toshizo, the Shinsengumi's Demon, is stern, unforgiving, and cruel on the surface. However, beneath this tough exterior lies a man with much more depth than initially meets the eye.
As a founding member of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata authored the Internal Regulations and developed the renowned fighting style known as Tennen-Rishin Ryu. Despite appearing to be in full control of the Shinsengumi, decisions are made by a council consisting of Kondou, Hijikata, and Yamanami.
He was the mentor of Okita Souji, the prodigious swordsman, and proved himself to be an exceptional fighter in his own right. In episode one, viewers get a glimpse of Hijikata’s formidable skills.
In later episodes, Hijikata shows concern for Okita’s illness and also worries about Tetsunosuke. He forbids Tetsu from wielding a sword, likely out of fear that Tetsu will follow the same violent path as Okita. His deep commitment to the Shinsengumi drives him to maintain a stern demeanor.
In Episode 7, he reprimands Kondou for allowing the Shinsengumi to act like a 'gang of buddies' and insists on preserving their edge. Although he demands perfection, he remains reasonable, earning the respect of all 40 members of the Shinsengumi.
