Tooru Naruse, known by his nickname Naruchiyo, is often associated with a monkey, which serves as the team's mascot. Nate, on the other hand, is a perpetual benchwarmer who lacks both coolness and talent, making him an unlikely basketball player. However, through sheer persistence and support from his friends, Nate gradually learns the art of basketball. In doing so, he builds up his confidence and starts to realize his dream of achieving success on the high school basketball court.
During this journey, Nate develops feelings for Mizzy Kusuda, a former classmate, but later finds himself attracted to another girl named Tomomi Koizumi. His signature move in basketball is the airwalk, and he incorporates many flashy techniques into his game, such as the evolved lay-up (double-clutch), miracle J, and invincible lay-ups. Interestingly, all these skills come to him subconsciously, suggesting an extraordinary natural talent for the sport.
