Age: 15-16 Birthday: July 1 (Cancer) Height: 167 cm Blood Type: B Natsume Takashi is the main protagonist who, like his late grandmother Natsume Reiko, possesses the ability to see ayakashi (spirits). He inherited the Book of Friends from her, a book containing contracts that bind spirits to servitude after being defeated by Reiko. Because Natsume strongly resembles his grandmother, he is often mistaken for her and pursued by ayakashi who despise Reiko but desire the Book of Friends. To resolve these issues, Natsume decided to end the book by returning all the names in it to their rightful owners. He is accompanied by the spirit Madara, affectionately called "Nyanko-sensei" or simply "sensei," with the promise of giving him the book upon his death. In return, Madara must protect Natsume. Orphaned at a young age, Natsume was moved from relative to relative. His ability to see and interact with ayakashi made him feel isolated from family and friends during his childhood. People labeled him as a "liar" and "attention seeker" when he tried to talk about the spirits, and his attempts to escape them led others to call him insane. To try to live a relatively "normal" life, Natsume became reclusive. Eventually, he was taken in by the Fujiwaras, a middle-aged couple from his father's side of the family. Unlike previous relatives, they genuinely cared for Natsume, and he loves them in return. He doesn't want to cause them any trouble, so he keeps his ayakashi problems secret. Natsume has an incredibly strong spiritual power that allows him to physically harm youkai. He forms friendships with both youkai and exorcists, though many are interested in using him for their own benefit. In the anime, Natsume is portrayed as more cheerful and good-natured, while in the manga, he appears slightly more somber and short-tempered, especially towards Nyanko-sensei. To return the names inscribed in the Book of Friends, Natsume must first visualize the spirit in his mind to learn its name. The book then opens to the page where the name is written, which he removes and places in his mouth while exhaling. The original spell used Reiko's saliva and breath; as Reiko's grandson and someone who looks very much like her, Natsume can also use this spell. However, each name's release drains almost all of his energy.
