Based on the real-life captain, Sagara Sōzō (1839 - 186/XMLSchema=0), he led the First Troop of the Sekihōtai. Sanosuke held him in high regard, seeing him as the perfect role model. His execution by the Meiji government during the purge of the Sekihōtai left Sanosuke embittered towards the government. Sagara Sōzō's head was displayed on a platform and in a cage for all to see, an image that still haunts Sanosuke to this day. After his death, Sanosuke adopted his name and became known as Sagara Sanosuke.
