Ma Ryou, better known as Uncle Hakubi, is the elderly uncle of Kensei and Sougetsu, the grand uncle of Renka, and a master of Chinese martial arts who trained Ryuu Genson and Shokatsu Kouan as his disciples. He is reputed to be the most knowledgeable individual in Yokohama Chinatown. Similar to his younger nephew Kensei, Hakubi is a balding old man with a mustache, dressed in traditional Chinese attire. Unlike Kensei, Hakubi also sports glasses and has a black beard.
Hakubi is a kind-hearted old man who maintains good relations with his younger nephew Kensei and looks after his grand niece Renka. His bond with Renka might seem extravagant since he was tricked by her into revealing Ryozanpaku's location after being given sake, and upon learning of her disappearance, he drowned his sorrows in alcohol and took out his rage on the Chinese Mafia residing in Yokohama while drunk.
The nature of his relationship with his disciples remains unclear, but it appears he trusts them enough to send them off to search for Renka and bring her back. In doing so, he mentions that he considers Ryozanpaku an unusual place and advises his disciples to be cautious.
His proficiency in Chinese Kenpo is not fully known, but he seems highly skilled in the Seven Stars Praying Mantis (Qixing Tanglang Quan) and Piercing Foot (Chuo Jiao) styles. His mastery is so formidable that he managed to eliminate the entire Chinese Mafia in Yokohama Chinatown, all while heavily intoxicated.
