Rika Sasaki is a classmate and friend of the titular character, Sakura Kinomoto. Known for her elegance and maturity, she can also be quite shy. Throughout the series, Rika demonstrates excellent cooking skills and a talent for crafts. She encounters several Clow Cards during the series, including one incident where she unknowingly buys a brooch that turns out to be The Sword card. This card takes control of her, causing her to attack Sakura. Sakura manages to stop Rika by using The Illusion card to show her an image of her beloved, allowing Sakura to capture the card. Later in the series, Rika nearly drowns during a magical trial created by Eriol Hiiragizawa to test Sakura’s ability to convert Clow Cards into Sakura Cards.
Rika is romantically involved with her teacher, Yoshiyuki Terada. In the manga, they are engaged to be married when she reaches the appropriate age, and they often spend time together on "dates." In the anime adaptation, their engagement is omitted, and many of their dates are removed, but they still show affection for each other. Rika gives Terada a handmade teddy bear, which he names after her. When Sakura uses The Illusion card to stop Rika's attacks, she refers to the image as "Sensei," meaning "teacher" in Japanese. During the final judgment, when Yue shows Sakura a world where everyone has lost their feelings for those they love, Rika is depicted handing Terada a paper without her usual blush and shyness.
In the English adaptation titled "Cardcaptors," Rika's name is changed to Rita, and all hints of her relationship with Terada are removed. Instead of being portrayed as a good student, she is shown struggling with her schoolwork, and her blushing around Terada is explained as embarrassment from having to stay after school frequently.
