Nikola Tesla, born in Serbia and later becoming an American, was an inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, and futurist. He is most renowned for his contributions to the development of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.
Tesla's accomplishments and his flair for showmanship in demonstrating his seemingly miraculous inventions brought him global fame. Despite earning substantial sums from his patents, he invested heavily in numerous experiments. For much of his life, he resided in a series of New York hotels. However, the cessation of his patent income and eventual financial ruin led to a decline in his living conditions. Still, Tesla persisted in hosting press events at his birthday parties to announce new inventions he was developing and to make (sometimes unconventional) statements. Due to his pronouncements and the nature of his work over the years, Tesla became widely regarded in popular culture as the quintessential "mad scientist".
