Orphaned at a young age after his parents perished in a car accident—an event that left a lasting impact on him for years—he was taken in by Aoe Reiji, "out of kindness." Due to Aoe's generosity, he developed feelings for the older man. Naoya is notably obedient to both Aoe and his brother Kiichi. Often likened to a cat (he also adopted a kitten named Gyoku), people commonly refer to him simply as the 'kitten' when discussing Reiji's lover.
