Naoji is unique among his peers as he does not hold a noble rank and is not considered part of the nobility. Born in Japan to a distinguished family, Naoji was sent to Kuchen by his father to gain education and experience, and also to safeguard him from the looming war in Japan (World War II). Without Naoji's knowledge, his father submitted an application for Kuchen citizenship on his behalf, a decision that greatly upset Naoji. He resides with a man named Foster, who was close to Naoji’s mother and acted like a father figure to her.
Naoji's grandmother was born into a Dukedom in Kuchen and was renowned for her impeccable manners and education. She met Naoji’s grandfather while he was studying abroad and they almost eloped together to Japan. Throughout the anime series, Naoji stands out as the only character who speaks in the common Japanese dialect, while others use an extremely polite and somewhat archaic form of Japanese to highlight their differences.
