Shirahama Mototsugu is Kenichi and Honoka's caring father and Saori's spouse. In his mid-forties, Mototsugu sports short dark blue hair and maintains a reasonably fit physique for his age. He's commonly seen in business suits from work or casual shirts while at home. During his teenage years, he was less toned and had fuller, smoother hair on top.
Mototsugu is increasingly proud of Kenichi's development into adulthood but feels melancholic as his son distances himself. Often portrayed as goofy and somewhat foolish, he serves as the series' comic relief, especially with his overprotective tendencies regarding his children's welfare. For instance, he's ready to use his shotgun, Sebastian, to retrieve Kenichi if necessary. Upon learning about the harsh training at Kenichi's dojo, he even considers forcibly bringing him back. When Honoka invites Tanimoto Natsu over, Mototsugu prepares to confront him with Sebastian.
His wife, Saori, usually prevents him from taking rash or embarrassing actions towards their kids, particularly Kenichi. Although he claims to have been popular among women Kenichi's age and received love letters from Saori, it was actually him who wrote numerous letters to win her heart, which succeeded. She frequently needs to knock some sense into him to prevent drastic measures, serving as comedic relief. Nonetheless, they deeply love each other, and she admires his bravery and seriousness concerning their son, always referring to him as "anata."
Mototsugu owns two shotguns named Sebastian and Maximilian, which he often attempts to bring along to reclaim Kenichi from the Ryozanpaku dojo. However, Saori always stops him. Despite his silly demeanor, he's highly proficient with firearms—good enough for Shigure to commend his skills. When he eventually shows up at the dojo armed with a new hunting rifle (Ludwig), unbeknownst to Saori, he demonstrates remarkable skill by carrying Kenichi under one arm, reloading the gun on the run, and accurately shooting down Shigure's traps.
