Mizunuma used to be the second most bullied student at Kouryou High School, just behind Kenichi. In the anime, he was initially chosen as Daimonji's opponent, but Kenichi took his place instead. Inspired by this courageous act, Mizunuma later joined the Shinpaku Alliance as one of its members and learned Karate from Alan Subishi at the Kyuukai (Secluded Ogre Association) Dojo located in an abandoned building.
Mizunuma is tall with glasses and smooth hair, resembling Tanaka Tsutomu's style. Like Kenichi before his fight with Odin, Mizunuma was often seen wearing his school uniform during classes and Karate robes at the dojo.
Similar to Kenichi, Mizunuma is a shy individual who was frequently bullied and stands up for his beliefs of righteousness by gaining strength and joining Shinpaku. In this regard, Mizunuma looks up to Kenichi as a role model. Unlike Kenichi, however, Mizunuma's sense of justice against enemies is more offensive than defensive, as evidenced when he severely injured a middle school bully and even struck Matsui in the face at one point.
Another significant role model for Mizunuma is his master, Alan Subishi. When Alan was incapacitated by Yomi's Tirawit Koukin, Mizunuma was consumed by feelings of revenge and was the first to step into the ring during the D of D tournament, aiming to advance Shinpaku so that he could confront Yomi.
