Kugayama, who stutters and is overweight, is Genshiken's sole artist until Ogiue joins. He often lacks the drive and dedication to complete a full dōjinshi. In volume 5, Sasahara asks Kugayama to create a dōjinshi for Comic-Fest, which he fails to accomplish until Saki forces him, Ogiue, and Sasahara to work on one under a tight deadline. Saki gives him the nickname 'Kugapii.' By volume 6, he graduates and starts working at a medical device company in Iidabashi.

Though initially appearing as a mediocre artist, Kugayama is actually quite talented. His true potential emerges only when properly motivated, especially when drawing more explicit content, particularly that of Yamada from Kujibiki Unbalance.
