Kanako, the fourth president of Genshiken, grew up in the United States from third grade and graduated from an American high school. She joined Genshiken at the start of the fall term. Typically soft-spoken and easily embarrassed, Kanako is surprisingly direct when it comes to her two main passions: cosplay and yaoi involving muscular, middle-aged men. With a great figure and a large bust, Kanako, along with her cosplays made by Tanaka, whom she starts dating, quickly becomes Genshiken’s main draw at student fairs.
Kanako's other passion is for yaoi featuring muscular, bald, middle-aged men. One reason she joins Genshiken is that they accept her unique interests. She is close to Saki, who was the first to learn about Kanako’s preference for older men.
Kanako opposes cosplay sex, believing it betrays the characters. However, when asked if it’s okay to have sex while dressed as a porn character, she becomes flustered and hints that she has already used this loophole. Her decision to become Genshiken’s president stems from Saki’s suggestion to turn it into a cosplay club ("Society for the Study of Cosplay" in Japanese). Later, she passes the presidency to Ogiue.
In the manga relaunch, it is revealed that Kanako is not job hunting because she is waiting for Tanaka to finish his additional schooling, suggesting she may plan to be a housewife or assist him.
