An innocent-looking yet incredibly powerful teenage girl, Meiko directly commands 12 Shikigami. These spirits are named after the Japanese adaptations of the Twelve Heavenly Generals (Jyuni Shinshou), legendary Hindu figures who later embraced Buddhism. The Shikigami are animal-like caricatures, inspired by the symbols these generals carry, which originate from the Chinese Earthly Branches system. Named Indara, Ajira, Kubira, Basara, Shindara, Sanchira, Haira, Makora, Shotora, Anchira, Bikara, and Mekira, they are usually well-controlled. However, when Meiko becomes emotionally distressed, her "pets" wreak havoc on anything or anyone nearby. Unfortunately, Meiko is highly sensitive, weak-willed, and easily hurt, causing frequent outbreaks of destruction. There are hints that she has lesbian feelings for Mikami, the only person who could calm her down during her first public loss of control over the Shikigami.
