Also known as Nodame, a blend of her family name and the first syllable of her given name. At the beginning of the series, Noda is a free-spirited, twenty-year-old second-year music student. She is portrayed as extremely messy: her cooking and cleaning skills are so poor that mushrooms grow on her clothes and her food can be poisonous to others (though she never gets sick from it). However, she is an exceptionally talented pianist who plays primarily by ear, in a cantabile style.
In love with Chiaki, she follows him around constantly, calling herself his "wife," and relies on him to help her navigate difficult situations. Occasionally, she feels an overwhelming need to play the piano, neglecting everything else to do so. Additionally, she enjoys childish manga and movies. She is always hungry and is often fed dinner by Chiaki; she also steals lunches from her friend Maki.
Nodame tends to speak cryptically, sometimes not even understanding herself, and frequently refers to herself in the third person while using nonsense words like "mukya" and "gyabo."
Initially, Nodame is highly dependent on Chiaki for ambition—she has little desire to become a professional pianist despite her remarkable talent and instead wants to be a kindergarten teacher, though many feel she is too reckless and lacks the necessary sensibility for teaching children. Her piano playing is considered unpredictable, deviating from the original dynamics, rhythms, and even themes. Realizing that her current approach to music will eventually distance her from Chiaki, Nodame gradually develops the drive to pursue music for her own sake. Her attitude towards music stems from a past incident where she was hurt by a teacher demanding she play music "as it's written."
Nodame's character is based on a real-life individual with the same name.
